Reddit History

Reddit was founded in 2005 by two college friends, Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian. The site quickly gained popularity, and in 2006 it was one of the most visited websites in the United States. By 2012, Reddit had become one of the most popular social networking sites on the web, with over 3.5 million unique visitors per month.

Like many social networking sites, Reddit is based on users posting content, or “posts,” which others can then “upvote” or “downvote.” The posts that receive the most upvotes rise to the top of the page, while those with the fewest upvotes fall to the bottom. This system allows for a large degree of flexibility and creativity, as users can explore a wide variety of topics.

One of the most popular features on Reddit is the “subreddits.” These are specific forums devoted to a particular topic, such as movies, music, or video games. There are thousands of different subreddits, each with its own community of users who share a common interest.

Another popular feature of Reddit is the “AMA,” or “Ask Me Anything.” This is a special subreddit where users can submit questions to be answered by experts in a particular field. AMAs have featured everyone from President Barack Obama to actor William Shatner.

Reddit has also been used as a platform for social activism. In 2012, for example, users mobilized to support the Occupy movement by posting information about local protests and events. More recently, Reddit has been at the forefront of the battle against online harassment, with users creating tools to help victims identify and report abuse.
